How do we tag companies under different business models?

Last updated date: Nov 20, 2024

Overview

At Tracxn, we are dedicated to providing our customers with accurate and insightful company data. A key component of our process of curating data is the meticulous tagging of companies under various business models.

For this, we have developed a unique and comprehensive tool, Taxonomy, which expands beyond the surface level sector classifications. It digs deeper into sectors and identifies niche business models and sub-models, offering an unmatched level of insights into a sector's landscape.

Why did we make a "Taxonomy"?

In today’s complex business landscape, investment decisions require more than just identifying “hot markets.” Understanding a sector means going beyond surface-level knowledge to grasp the depth and nuances within each area.

For example, while there may be thousands of taxi companies globally, it was Uber’s distinct business model and scale that made it a game-changer. Our taxonomy was built to capture these distinctions, highlighting not only the markets companies operate in but also the unique business models and operational strategies that set them apart.

Unlike standard classifications, our taxonomy provides a rich, granular view, allowing investors, corporate teams, and analysts to see the specific role each company plays within its field and identify opportunities with greater precision.

Benefits of a Taxonomy

N8Get sector insights :  The Taxonomy view offers a comprehensive look at the sector landscape, including business models, the number of companies, funding activity in previous years, and notable companies.

How do we accurately tag companies within our ever-evolving taxonomy?

We follow a meticulous, multi-step process to ensure that every company is classified under the correct sector and business model:
Step 1 : Data collection
We begin by gathering data from a vast array of sources, which includes scanning 700M+ websites, registrars and filing institutions. This builds the most comprehensive pool of companies available.
Step 2 : Industry categorization
We take a balanced approach, leveraging AI tools alongside the expertise of our specialists.

While the AI assists with processing vast amount of data, it’s our skilled team who ensures companies are correctly placed into one of the primary industries. This blend of automation and human insight ensures precision at every step.
Step 3 : Sector tagging
Following industry categorization, our expert researchers conduct a thorough analysis of each company to ensure it is accurately assigned to the relevant sectors.

This process, rooted in thorough research and reviews, guarantees that every company is tagged under the most accurate sector possible.
Step 4 : Niche business model tagging
At the forefront of this process are our highly knowledgeable sector specialists. These experts meticulously analyze each company's operations, offerings, and website, and tag the company under relevant business models and sub-models into one of the 56,000+ taxonomy nodes.

At every stage of this process, from data collection to final tagging, thorough reviews are done to make sure each company is accurately classified.
We cover over 2,900 sectors worldwide, each mapped into hundreds to thousands of nodes for comprehensive analysis.
