Tamil Nadu Startups See Difficult Year, Funding Falls 85% In 2023

The Tracxn Geo Annual Report: Tamil Nadu Tech 2023, based on our extensive database, provides a round-up of funding and other major developments in the Tamil Nadu Tech space in 2023. 

The Tamil Nadu tech sector ranks sixth among the top-funded states in India based on the funding to date. This space has raised over $3.4 billion in VC funding in the last five years. The Tamil Nadu Tech ecosystem has witnessed total funding of $255 million in 2023, becoming the fourth highest funded state in 2023 after Karnataka, Maharashtra and Haryana. However, there was a decline in funding from 2022 to 2023, due to investor reluctance brought on by macroeconomic factors, recession anxieties and rising interest rates. 

The state also ranks fourth based on the number of tech startups. Further, the state government has unveiled a revised Startup and Innovation Policy 2023 that includes several recommendations for action to propel the state to the forefront of the startup ecosystem. 

The Tamil Nadu Tech startup ecosystem secured a total funding of $255 million in 2023, an 85% plunge compared with $1.7 billion raised in 2022 and a drop of 57% from $598.4 million raised in 2021. 2022 was the highest-funded year in this space in the last 10 years. 

Seed-stage funding stood at $32.6 million, a decline of 47% compared with $61.6 million raised in 2022. Early-stage rounds fell 86% to $77 million in 2023 from $567 million in 2022. Companies in this space attracted late-stage funding worth $145 million in 2023, a drop of 87% compared with $1.1 billion raised in 2022.

Only one $100M+ funding round was seen in the Tamil Nadu tech startup ecosystem in 2023. TI Clean Mobility, a manufacturer of electric three-wheelers, raised $145 million in its series D funding round led by Multiples Alternate Asset Management and State Bank of India. 

Transportation & Logistics Tech, Environment Tech and Auto Tech were the top funded segments in the Tamil Nadu tech ecosystem. Companies in the Transportation & Logistics Tech space raised $160 million in 2023, a drop of 69% when compared with $511 million raised in 2022. 

The Environment Tech sector attracted investments worth $151 million in 2023, a drop of 70% from $501 million raised during the previous year. Funding into the Auto Tech space fell to $150 million in 2023 from $558 million in 2022. 

The overall Tamil Nadu tech startup ecosystem witnessed eight acquisitions in 2023, a slight uptick from five acquisitions in 2022. Acquisition of DUMS by Coromandel International, and Lenskart’s purchase of Tango Eye were some of the prominent deals of 2023. 

Chennai was the highest-funded city, accounting for 97% of the total funds raised by tech startups in Tamil Nadu. Companies based in Chennai raised $247 million in 2023, followed by those based in Coimbatore ($6 million) and Ranipet ($2 million). 

RTBI, The Chennai Angels and Chiratae Ventures are the most active investors in Tamil Nadu till date. Peak XV Partners, Speciale Invest and Java Capital were the top seed-stage investors in 2023, while Mayfield, Celesta Capital and Rocketship were the most active early-stage investors in 2023.
